NYX Back to Basics Beauty School Dropout palette review + swatches

If you’ve been reading my blog posts recently, you’ll be familiar with the NYX Back to Basics Beauty school dropout palette that I have. I’ve been creating a few looks using this and have really been enjoying using it. Another look with this palette will be up on my blog very soon! I decided I wanted to review the whole palette for you guys because I think it’s awesome and has everything you need.

As you can see, this palette includes 35 different eye shadows, 3 blushes, 2 highlights and 2 contour/bronzers. Each and every pan in this palette is very pigmented. The shimmer eye shadows are particularly creamy and blendable, which is amazing as shimmer shades are often not as pigmented as mattes in other palettes. Most of the mattes are also super blendable. I had trouble with a couple of them (notably the last blue on the bottom row) wanting to go patchy, but this is only the odd couple and it’s definitely nothing you can’t work with.
Both highlighters are GORGEOUS. They are super glowy which is perfect for me.
The contour/bronze shades feel very different to use. The first one is super pigmented so I suggest not applying with a heavy hand. I also find that I have to be careful not to swirl the brush in it too much to avoid kick back. It applies on the face beautifully  and blends so nicely. It’s matte so I tend to use this one most. The second bronze shade has shimmer in it which I don’t use as frequently but I still think it looks gorgeous. You can swirl your brush in this without kick back and it’s more of a slowly buildable bronzer than the first.
The three blushes are all amazing. I tend to use the first one the most which is matte and it is a peachy colour (similar to and great dupe for the Too Faced Papa Don’t Peach). I like these type of colours on my pale skin. The middle blusher is quite orangey and I personally think would look stunning on a deeper skin tone. I can use this one if I only use a little. The last one is a pale but bright matte pink. I like to use this when I have done a very feminine girly look. Each blush needs to be applied with a light hand.
NYX is a affordable brand and the quality you get is as good as some higher end brands.

I picked a variety of the shadows to swatch. As you can see the shimmers are very smooth and creamy looking. A couple of the mattes swatched a bit chalky looking, however I haven’t noticed any of them applying to the eye this way.

I really recommend this palette as you can create many different looks. The quality is amazing, especially considering NYX is a drugstore brand. This makes a lovely gift too.

What do you think?
