Disappointing Products!

Hi everyone, happy August! Hope all is well for you so far this month & that you’re feeling super motivated. I can’t believe we’re well over half way into 2019 now. It’s gone so fast. Today I wanted to share a ‘disappointing products’ post with you all as I haven’t done one in a long time. Just as a little disclaimer, please don’t be offended if I mention something you really love – we all have different wants from our products, & what works for me, might not work for you. So without further ado, let’s have a little rant about disappointing products.

First I have TWO foundations that I have found to be disappointing: The Smashbox Studio Skin 15 Hour Wear Hydrating Foundation & the Too Faced Born This Way Foundation. I heard really good things about both of these & know people who are in love with them, but for me, neither worked & I’ll tell you why!

Smashbox (lower) Too Faced (higher)

Smashbox Studio Skin Foundation
I picked this up on recommendation from quite a few people at work. Their skin always looks amazing so I was sure I was going to love this one, but after giving it chance after chance, I’ve definitely decided this one just isn’t for me. It goes on nicely with a beauty blender, looks hydrating, dewy, radiant. However, once it dries down, it sinks right into any fine lines / larger pores and looks anything but smooth on my skin. When I apply concealer on top of this, it takes the foundation right off underneath, leaving me looking patchy. & I can’t blame the concealers as they are my faves. If you have super smooth, plump skin, then this foundation will more than likely look beautiful on you. However, if you have fine lines, or have more mature skin, I would say you may dislike this one as much as me.

Too Faced Born This Way Foundation
I’m sure you’ve all heard the hype about this foundation, I know it’s a lot of people’s favourite. & it goes on so flawlessly, particularly on super smooth skin. When I apply it on someone at work to colour match them etc, it looks so stunning on a lot of people & I’m always so jealous that it doesn’t quite look this way on me. I have to admit, even for me it does go on smoothly & evens out skin without emphasizing any texture, and honestly I do think this is a nice foundation if you aren’t looking for a full coverage long lasting one. I can’t build this up to be anything above a medium coverage despite it’s medium to full claims. In fact, you do have to build up layers to even achieve medium. And another thing I dislike about this one is the fact that it seems to fade easily throughout the day and can result in patchiness. I don’t HATE this, but it just isn’t what I expected & it doesn’t live up to the claims.

So that’s the foundation black list for me… my foundation recommendations include the Estee Lauder Double Wear, L’oreal Infallible Fresh Wear, Kat Von D Lock It & NYX Can’t Stop Won’t Stop. Now onto some other disappointments.

BECCA Under Eye Brightening Corrector
I’d wanted to try this for quite some time as I definitely struggle with under eye darkness & I know a lot of YouTubers hyped this up a lot a while ago. So when BECCA came to Boots, I decided why not finally give it a go! Unfortunately, it’s a pass for me. This has such a sticky texture which is difficult to work with. I apply it under my eye using a finger as this tends to warm up the product easier making for a better application. I pat it out gently. This does brighten the area no problem & reflects the light. After applying concealer, only the TINIEST hint of brightening remains, making the area look barely different with or without this, which is not what you want if you are paying high end prices. However, probably the main reason I don’t like this is because it emphasizes fine lines & causes a lot of creasing! It makes the under eye area look old & dry, and it looks better without this product. So unless you have super smooth under eyes & just want that bright effect, then I’d not recommend this one.

YSL Volume Effet Faux Cils Mascara
When I first used this mascara, I did really like it. It gives your lashes a lot of volume as well as length. & the lashes remain looking good throughout the day, without dropping too bad. However, I’ve noticed that this smudges SO BAD. I end up with black under my eye, as well as printed under my brow. I don’t have this problem with all mascaras, some much more affordable ones such as the Maybelline Lash Sensational gives me amazing length & volume without smudging at all. So I don’t want to pay these kind of prices, to end up with panda eyes. I’ll be avoiding this one in future – it definitely qualified as a disappointing product!

Too Faced Lip Injection
This gloss is on the list simply because it hurts me SO BAD. I didn’t think I was super sensitive to lip plumpers, but apparently I am, as a lot of my friends don’t mind this one. I have to admit though, that this smooths out the lips, plumps them a little & leaves them feeling soft. I wish I could stand to use this, but I can’t so it’s a waste of time for me to have. Plus, it smells like calpol a lot.

Zoella Snow Smooth Body Butter
I know this was limited edition, but I wanted to include it on the list as I found this one really disappointing. This is the greasiest body butter ever. It left me feeling so greasy and sticky that I had to jump back into the shower to rinse it all off a couple hours later. It just doesn’t sink in. It’s such a shame as the scent is gorgeous & I enjoyed other bits from this range, but this one is a hard pass.

Clinique Take Off The Day Balm
I know this is another product that a lot of people love, but I just can’t seem to get on with it no matter how much I try. As a contact lense wearer, I have to extra extra careful around my eyes, but this one ALWAYS gets in my eyes which is very strange. On top of that, it doesn’t seem to take off eye makeup well for me. Maybe I am doing something wrong as I know others adore this. I wanted to love it so I could stop using makeup wipes, but I’ll have to keep hunting for the right product unfortunately.

& that’s everything for my disappointing products! I hate it when a product doesn’t work out? I’ll probably try to use up a couple of these, whilst the other ones will be passed on to someone else, or binned as a last resort! I hate to waste products so I do hope someone else will want to atleast try some of them.

Let me know your opinions of these below, do you love any of them? What products have let you down lately?

Thanks so much for reading,

Jazmin xx

I love the honesty of this post – thank you
It’s like you say not all products work for everyone. I don’t think anyone can or should be offended by this post – you are so respectful of the products you don’t like.

I’ve heard soooo many good things about the Born This Way foundation. Shame it didn’t work for you! Also, the greasy body butter sounds bloody awful!

I had too! I was excited to try it but it just didn’t work for me! & oh it’s so bad x

To be honest, I find all mascara very disappointing as, as far as i am concerned, they never deliver on promises. Too Faced, I think there is a lot of hyped around the palette but I was never a fan of their other products

Yes a lot of mascara’s don’t seem to perform but there are a few I do like – the Maybelline Lash Sensational is still my fave & it’s affordable so I’m going to stick with that when I’ve not got falsies on. I haven’t tried LOADS from Too Faced, but I do like a gloss I have from there & the born this way powder is pretty good too x

I love reading product Regrets! There’s nothing worse than spending a lot of money on a product you have high hops for and it doesn’t work. I haven’t actually tried any of these products before. I’m surprised about the too faced foundation because I hear everyone rave about it, it doesn’t sounds too good if it settles in fine lines! X

Yes so many people do love that foundation but it just didn’t work out for me unfortunately! X

Totally agree with the Becca product. I’ve never understood that hype. I love the Too Faced foundation but my skin is dry so I don’t have the issues with it fading X

It’s such a pointless product right?! I’m glad that foundation works for you! X

Thank you for sharing this. There is nothing more disappointing then trying a product that everyone was raving about only to find it falls flat – but reading through this puts everything in a slightly different light. While someone may still want to try the products themselves, they can now go into it with a much more realistic expectation.

Yes we are all different! Maybe go and get coloured matched in store and they will likely put you a full face on & then you can see if you like it x

I totally agree about the coverage of the Born This Way foundation! I thought it was just me, but it’s actually a sheer coverage and shows all my freckles. It’s also not that easy to build up and goes quite cakey, despite still looking pretty sheer-medium coverage x

I’d only heard good things about Too Faced before, so it’s nice to read something that shows it in a different light. Sometimes negative reviews on a product are more important – there are so many good ones out there that we have to be able to knock a few off our lists, right? Great post!

Thank you so much – I agree negative reviews are definitely important. Everything isn’t for everyone x
